HISTORY OF WNYG
Owned by the Babylon-Bay Shore Broadcasting Company, WBAB AM was first licensed at 500 watts, then to 1kw in 1962. The AM had a simulcast in FM for many years and there was even speculation of starting a regional all-news format in the mid 1960's. The AM split from the FM in 1976 and became WNYG 1440 (New York Gospel) Radio. Due to financial problems, the FM was sold in 1979 while the AM continued under numerous formats, (Gospel, CHR/14 Gold, Standards, Oldies, Spanish, Oldies, CHR and once again...Gospel (with a Christian Contemporary format). The programming history of WBAB FM is indeed interesting. It was everything from Big Band to Top 40 and finally, what most would call "Free Form Album Rock". WNYG's format history also holds a diverse lineup of programming
Considered the main breakaway, WBAB FM was purchased on Memorial Day in 1979 by All Shores Radio LTD. Most of the equipment from the old WBAB studios were moved across the street several hundred feet south of Sunrise Highway on Route 109 (in the same building occupied by P.C. Richards & Sons). The original WBAB Gates/Harris transmitter remained in the WNYG complex next to the AM unit while WBAB leased back the space for the transmitter and use of the old tower. Audio from the new studio across the street was fed back to the WNYG building via dual 15K equalized radio lines. For the better part of that year, WBAB's RF could actually be heard leaking through the older studio equipment at WNYG. However, the official breakaway took place in mid 1980, when at the stroke of midnight, WBAB's Chief Engineer John Blake threw the switch that changed the audio feed to an STL (studio transmitter link) between the WBAB/P.C. Richards studios and a newly constructed transmitter site located in Dix Hills. For all intensive purposes, WBAB 102.3 FM had officially broke loose from all ties to WNYG.
Soon after the studio re-location, WNYG (as New York Gospel) made it's first big format change to CHR under the banner of Long Island's Treasure Chest - 14 Gold WNYG (as New York Gold). The birth of Long Island's Treasure Chest 1440 WNYG, took place in late 1979.
Many of the disc jockeys on B-103 were first spinning oldies on WNYG during the early 1990's. Jim Pierce, Phyllis Rose, Bill Houston, Lenny Cocco, Rob Jeantet, Chip Ordway, Robert Carle, Mike Erickson, Ed Newlands and Harry Hepcat were among the DJ's behind the mic during the high point of WNYG's Oldies format
WNYG was sold in June of 1994 to Beinvenida Communications of NY, which installed a Spanish format. Five years later, more financial difficulties ensued and the station landed in bankruptcy court. Meanwhile, the bankruptcy court judge contacted Murial Hornstein (WNYG's original owner), in hopes of obtaining a list of possible ex-staff members who could be appointed by the court as "Trustees" (or... station caretakers). These "trustees" would be responsible for the security of the facility and tower site, while the lengthy process of transferring the license continued. In less than one week, WNYG 1440 was back on the air at full power playing your favorite oldies!
The CHR format was re-installed after Multicultural Broadcasting assumed control (the on-air staff consisted of students) and the station became known as Student Radio 1440 (a reincarnation of the now defunct Columbia School Of Broadcasting). In less than one year, Student Radio closed it's doors.
WNYG then went full circle, once again becoming a Contemporary Religious station run by one of it's previous DJ's Phillis Rose. Not only has it come full circle but it is the only Contemporary Christian format radio on Long Island. It brings both
national ministries and local ministries as well as great contemporary Christian songs to the listeners throughout Suffolk, Nassau and parts of NY City. Their "Message Is In The Music".
